Prof. Jacob Kaimenyi, the Cabinet Secretary, Ministry of Education, Kenya will deliver a keynote address at the conference. Other notable speakers include Mr. Gabriel Negatu, Regional Director, African Development Bank, Dr. Bakary Diallo, the Rector of African Virtual University, and Dr. Daphne Koller, the Executive Director of Cousera, an American education company that partners with the top universities in the world to offer courses online offering massive open online courses (MOOCs).
The academic conference is part of the AVU efforts to promote research and development in the area of open, distance and eLearning. In addition, the AVU is currently in the process of setting up a Center for Virtual Education Innovation in Nairobi, Kenya which will host a mobile learning laboratory. The African Development Bank is funding AVU research agenda as part of the activities of the AVU Multinational Support Project II.
The theme of the conference is: "Integrating eLearning and Open Education to Increase Access to Quality Education and Training in Africa". It will bring together about 200 participants from across Africa and beyond to discuss opportunities and challenges of integration of eLearning and Open Education to increase access to quality education and training. The conference primarily targets academics from 53 Partner Institutions of the AVU.
Board Members of the OpenCourseWare Consortium (OCWC), a global grass root open education movement, will attend the conference and hold their board meeting as a side event. The AVU is a sustaining member of the OCWC.
