DC based Ghanaian Afua Sam, Fashion Designer and Owner of STUDIO D'MAXSI created ‘THE BRA DRESS’, to celebrate the survivors of breast cancer. The ‘BRA DRESS’, a STUDIO D'MAXSI original design, was designed and constructed with love and support to honor all Breast Cancer Survivors around the World. It has been featured in some of the Breast Cancer events that Afua has had the opportunity to participate in including ‘Pink Jams Rocks The Runway’ Fashion Show, ‘Steps To The Cure’ Fashion Show, ‘Green & Gorgeous’ Fashion Event and ‘Pretty In Pink ‘Pop The Runway Fashion Show.
This year during her travels to three countries doing "Fashion Adventure II 2013", she took the BRA DRESS along to Paris for a Photo Shoot with "Team International" in support of Breast Cancer Survivors. The ‘BRA DRESS’ has more travels in her future as it accompanies Afua Sam on future ‘Fashion Adventures’ projects that will be taking place in other countries. On Team International and Fashion Adventure II 2013, Afua Sam says - “Although from different parts of the world namely: Switzerland, London, Senegal, Ethiopia, Ghana, Asia and Argentina; Team International members all live in Paris. It has always been my dream to work with different artists or anyone involved with fashion one way or the other. I have been blessed to work with so many people but starting ‘Fashion Adventure’ has taken me to different countries around the world, I have met so many people including ‘Team International’. There is nothing like working with a team that has a common goal of GIVING BACK. They have all done well with their talent and been a positive part of their communities by giving back. My appreciation goes to the entire team especially, Flavia Redavero who has been part of it since day one”
The bras used in making the ‘BRA DRESS’ were donated by Bali Bra company. The inspiration to create it came when Afua Sam had the opportunity to work with ‘Steps to the Cure Foundation’ three years in a row. A huge shout out to Lori and Larry Lickstein of the ‘Steps to the Cure Foundation’, the Bali Bra company and all breast cancer survivors around the world. Women who have worn the ‘BRA DRESS’ include Miss Maimah Karmo, the Founder/ CEO of Tigerlily Foundation and also a Survivor, Miss Ghana Universe - Awurama Simpson, Melanie Small; a Survivor, Brittany Britto (Fashion Model) and Nadia Christian (Fashion Model) and many more.

Breast Cancer Awareness Month (BCAM), also referred to in America as National Breast Cancer Awareness Month (NBCAM), is an annual international health campaign organized by major breast cancer charities every October to increase awareness of the disease and to raise funds for research into its cause, prevention, diagnosis, treatment and cure. The campaign also offers information and support to those affected by breast cancer. A mammogram – the screening test for breast cancer – can help find breast cancer early.
