Saran Kaba Jones is the Founder and Executive Director of FACE Africa, a Massachusetts based nonprofit organization that funds and supports sustainable clean water, sanitation and hygiene projects in Liberia, while also empowering young girls and women through education and skills training.

Saran was born in Liberia but left shortly before the country's first world war in 1989 when she was just 8 years old. A world citizen, Saran moved to Egypt in 1991 where she lived for 4 years, followed by 2 years in France and another 2 in Cyprus. In 1999, she came to the U.S for college and after worked for the Singapore government in private equity for 5 years.  It wasn’t until 20 years later that Saran returned to Liberia to find a country in desperate need and made it her mission to help.

In early 2009, FACE Africa was incorporated into a 501c3, and began efforts to fundraise and raise awareness supporting sustainable clean water. When the Davis Projects for Peace gave the group $10,000 grant, she was able to begin work on her first project in a Barnersville, Liberia.  FACE Africa installed a water purification system known as the Skyhydrant, that supplies hundreds of community residents with safe drinking water.
In June 2010, FACE Africa received $20,000 from the Facebook Chase Community Giving Program where users chose from 500,000 of their favorite small and local to win a share of $5 million.
Since launching FACE Africa in January 2009, the organization has raised almost $250,000 for clean water projects in Liberia and is gearing up to launch a social enterprise that will provide economic opportunities for women in Liberia.
More than just a clean water advocate, Saran is a social entrepreneur and change agent passionate about giving back. This year alone, Saran was a Huffington Post “Greatest Person of the Day,” listed as one of Forbes Magazine’s 20 Youngest Power Women In Africa as well as Marieme Jamme's "Top 50 Africans of the Year 2011, and selected as the 2011 Voss Foundation Women helping Women Honoree. Her work has been profiled in the Boston Globe, Harper’s Bazaar, Instyle Magazine and Boston Magazine among others.
Saran Kaba Jones is Applause Africa’s 2011 Person of the Year. Learn more about the humble humanitarian in the next issue of Applause Africa.

Beauty Of The Dark Continent.

Just like every single one of the four million people who were forced to leave their families, cattle, and burning villages behind, she walked for hundreds of miles into the great unknown after the outbreak of civil war in Sudan in 1985, not aware if she would ever return to the place she had always called home, Read More...

DR. OLAJIDE WILLIAMS 'THE HIP HOP DOC’

“Switch it up/Put some water in the cup,” the man standing onstage alongside old-school hip-hop legends Doug E. Fresh and Artie Green raps with the swagger of a new school artist. With his tie loosely draped across his chest, his top button undone, and Ray Ban-like glasses reminiscent of B.O.B’s, Read More...
