Last Thursday, April 7, Shared Interest celebrated change-makers for Southern Africa in a star-studded tribute featuring an exciting multi-media program with Raiza Said beautifully displaying the power of the Continent in a rousing musical performance.

Felicia Mabuza-Suttle in her second year running as host, kept the night racing along: Honoree and impact investing pioneer, Antony Bugg-Levine of Nonprofit Finance Fund, gave a moving speech about his relationship with Shared Interest; and the tremendous work Phumzile Mlambo-Ngcuka does at the helm of UN Women was recognized.

Danny Glover presented awards to Jonathan Demme and Nona Hendryx and recognized the late journalist, Danny Schechter, for their parts in Artists United Against Apartheid, which made the seminal song and video, Sun City, an important and high-profile salvo in the successful fight against apartheid rule.

PepsiCo was also honored for their part in supporting change in Southern Africa.

As Shared Interest Executive Director, Donna Katzin, noted: “The energy and passion in the room at the Shared Interest 22nd Anniversary Awards Gala embodied the spirit of the change-makers we gathered to honor. Once again the powerful and irrepressible energy so abundant in the people of Southern Africa invigorated Shared Interest’s supporters and friends across the Atlantic.”

Major corporate sponsors for the 2016 gala were The Bergman Family, South African Airways, Prudential, Citi, Synergos and CUNY.

Shared Interest mobilizes resources for Southern Africa’s economically disenfranchised communities to sustain themselves and build equitable nations.
